The Idea of Global Governance

by Ipsita Choudhury / Thursday, 06 August 2020 / Published in Social Awareness

Daniel Bell, an American sociologist once thought that the national government is “inadequate” to solve bigger problems like the influence of global economic competition and the destruction of the world environment. But it has become “more than sufficient” to deal with simple issues related to cities or localities. (Anthony Giddens, 2012). It is quite reasonable to say that it is not possible for the nations to control the global economy or the activities of big organizations/corporations dealing with many countries at a time. For example, an organization pursuing its activities in a particular country involving its people as employees may decide to shift their branch in some other country. The reason can be anything such as plans to increase productivity, availability of more resources, etc. In such a case, the national government has a little role to play in controlling the globalizing processes bound up with economy of the world. In such a situation the common question can be, whether global governance is adequate to address the issues related to globalization.

Global Governance

According to the British sociologist Anthony Giddens, the idea of global governance is not about establishing a government for the entire world or the global set up. It can be concentrated on dealing and solving the global problems with the framework of rules. Both the national and international governments should be responsible for regulating and directing the set of rules. From such an idea, it can be said that the concept of global governance can be used to tackle both the national and international problems, crisis, create connections among different nations and promote global unity. There are a few global organizations which conjointly deal with the issues of different nations like International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Health Organization (WHO), World Bank (WB), United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), etc.

Global Social Democracy

The concept of a global social democracy is also deserves special attention while discussing global governance. David Held, a British political scientist opined that a global social democracy can operate through the local, national and global levels. Now there is the involvement of primary forces such as administrative agencies, courts, legislatures from the states in case of any decision making whereas once the states were the active participants in international politics which only included the heads and foreign ministers. Today the opinion of the primary actors of a country also matter to some extent. In this context it can be said that a global social democracy can be made possible by considering both the local (region specific) and national (country specific) issues and ultimately discussing the issues on a global level for productive results.

Analyzing the aspects of Global Governance

With the rising problems of mass destruction, pollution, inadequate resources, economic crisis, etc many people and leaders of the think that a global government is required. With each passing moment it is becoming very difficult to deal the crises alone for a particular nation. But it is also very challenging for the nations of the world to come to a common agreement for resolving any particular problem. If a global government is created then it will consist of representatives of different countries and it is quite normal for such an organization to come up with various opinions and diverse thoughts. But analyzing the positive aspects of such a system it can be mentioned that the global government can be used to promote friendship and harmonious relation among nations. It can be a political authority serving humanity and eradicating global problems like poverty, financial crises, etc of the poor nations. But until now it is not known to anyone if someday in the future such a system of government would came to existence or not.
